Why I hate MTNL’s Triband now.. [Updated]

January 1, 2007

Well,

Up until now, I always felt proud about the fact that I was here, sitting in Mumbai, enjoying an amazing “broadband” experience while my friends in the rest of India didn’t. For starts, MTNL doesn’t count Uploads towards its monthly limit. Meaning, upload as much as you want, your limit won’t be affected which is not the case in BSNL. Also, MTNL’s basic plan was for a mere Rs.199 which allowed a monthly download of 400 Megabytes @ 256 kilobits per second. Also, MTNL’s only unlimited plan, allowed free downloads from 0000 hours ( 12 AM ) to 0800 hours ( 8 AM ) while the folks with BSNL enjoyed the same from 0200 hours ( 2 AM ) to 0800 hours ( 8 AM ) Thats a loss of 2 whole hours.

Well, its sad to say this, but all this is a thing of the past. MTNL now gives more and more reasons for me to hate it, with every day thats passes by.

Reasons ? Read on…

  • MTNL Mumbai is yet to introduce an Unlimited plan ( 24 hour unlimited with no download limit ) although Airtel, BSNL and MTNL Delhi already introduced such a plan. I mean, if MTNL Delhi has an unlimited plan, why not Mumbai ?
  • With the recent free speed upgrades, provided by MTNL & BSNL, although both the providers upgraded they plans to features speeds “upto 2MBps” MTNL’s Night Unlimited plan customers are still stuck at speeds = 256 KBps. Yes that’s right. No upgrades for customers ( like me ) who have the Night Unlimited plan.
  • Not only that, along with the speed upgrade, BSNL also upgraded the Download Limits for all the plans. So the upgrade in speed was proportionate to the upgrade in download limit. However, the guys at MTNL, have just provided an upgrade in the speeds. The download limit continues to remain the same. So customers now enjoy faster consumption of their limits at speeds upto 2MBps :| ( Ohh I pity such customers )

So all in all, even though I have no complaints against Triband’s service, i still MTNL has lost the ability to keep its customers happy. Atleast me, would love it if they introduced an Unlimited plan.

I just rung up 1504 ( MTNL’s Triband’s helpline ) and I was told that that have no knowledge if they are gonna introduce any unlimited plan yet. ( Oh well … :| )

Not only this, but Airtel Broadband refuses to service my area, reasons unknown.

Update 1: I have no idea how this is happening, but it seems god has answered half of my prayers. Believe it or not, I’ve been getting close to 2Mbps speeds since about 3 hours now. I hope they don’t revert back.
