Don’t see “Slumdog Millionaire”. It sucks!

A phony poseur that has been made only to mock India for the viewing pleasure of the First World!!

“Slumdog…” is just every scrap of dirt picked up from every corner and piled up together to try and hit back at the growing might of India.

There’s a heavy controversy raging in India, now that Slumdog Millionaire has hit the theatres, about the movie and the harsh reality pictured in the movie. Well known citizens of India like the actor Amitabh Bachchan and the above linked author Arindam Chaudhari go on to criticize the movie saying the it showcases only the negative things about Mumbai and that we should not watch it.

Well, HULLO! It’s a fucking movie. And it showcases the harsh reality of Mumbai. Advising people to not see the movie isn’t going to change the fact that Mumbai is still faced with the problems faced in movie. It’s not going to change the fact that the movie is going to win awards internationally. Instead of advising people to NOT watch the movie, how about advising them to go ahead and WATCH it, learn what’s happening in Mumbai and then advise them to contribute towards making Mumbai a better place?

The author compares the movie head-on with Salaam Bombay. I’m not sure why, but he fails to realize that it’s a FUCKING movie. Agreed that Slumdog showcases only a part of the true essence of Mumbai, but it’s something that is portrayed beautifully. The movie shows that, in spite of the harsh conditions, how the children adapt themselves to survive and grow up. It shows how a child who has lived a life of poverty goes on to win MILLIONs, but it’s not the money that attracted him, it was the love of his life.

Let’s just follow the logic of the author here. Let’s just take a look at some of the bollywood movies that have come out in the past

  • Let’s NOT watch Love Story 2050, because it’s set in the future, and the world will come to know that we Indians believe in bullshit that the director throws at us.
  • Let’s NOT watch Swades, because the world will come to know that a large amount of Villages in the country still lack basic amenities like electricity, water, food
  • Let’s NOT watch Lagaan, because the world will come to know that the British came and fucked us for some many years together while we were just sitting fucks ducks.
  • Let’s NOT watch Traffic Signal too

Of course, I could come up with many such examples. The fact is, a movie is a movie, irrespective of who makes it. A movie is supposed to entertain you, yet make a point and make you learn that. I fail to realize how Slumdog NOT do exactly that
