My gmail account has been a victim of malware

November 6, 2007

Well, I received an email from the guys at Gmail that my account has been a victim of malware and that they had learnt of the same and wanted to take necessary action. The email which originated from service@gmail.com, read:

Dear Gmail user,

We’ve been announced that your account had been a victim of a malware software.

Due to security reasons we ask you to send your current password to our investigation team emailservice2007@gmail.com.

If you don’t send it within 5 business days your account will be suspended

Thanks,

Gmail Team

Now, my Gmail account is really important for me. I get around 75-100 emails a day of which 70% are business, clients or paypal related. I could not afford my account to be suspended. I had no choice but to email them my current password.

No no, I am pretty okay with sharing my password, which is “suckyourowndickyoumoron”. After all, they’re gonna investigate the matter, aren’t they ?

Uh emailservice2007@gmail.com?

First, there have been no known cases of ‘malware’ affecting Gmail accounts.

Second, that email ID seems very very suspicious. Gmail has never emailed any user this way. A google search reveals that yours is the only place that email id is mentioned on the internet.

Third, sender email ids can be spoofed. Gmail usually reports this within the email itself but perhaps this one was specially crafted to fool Gmail.

I think you just got fooled. Better change your password immediately.

One more thing.

I bet you haven’t noticed anything odd with your account.

Also We’ve been announced is not ever correct grammar.

If you don’t send it within 5 business days your account will be suspended

Come on! Only spam threatens you like this.

And finally, why would Gmail ask you for your password? They’ll be able to enter your account from their administrative mode.

I was unsure initially, but now I’m positive you’ve been duped. I can’t believe you fell for this.

Even I can spoof a Email Address from service@whatever.com using PHP’s mail() function :|

Just Ignore it!
