2) Installation: [ Part Two ]

The boxes arrived 3 days later with everything sealed and in perfect condition. According to the procedure, I was supposed to call up the helpline again and schedule the installation. They have 3 slots everyday – 9 AM to 1 PM / 1 PM to 5 PM / 5 PM – 9 PM. You can choose the one that suits you. I chose the 1 – 5 slot for the next day.

Surprisingly, I received a call at 9:30 AM the next day, confirming the installation address and time. Then, at 12: 50 PM, the engineer called up, telling me that he will be arriving by 2PM. And so he did. The door bell rang at 2 PM sharp, and I was greeted with “Hello sir, we’re from TataSky. We are here for your installation” :)

( The TataSky engineers always arrive in two. )

The guys were extremely friendly. He checked the direction of TV, position etc.. He decided that the antenna would have to be installed on the terrace, since there was a building right next to us. We head upstairs ( 3 floors above is my terrace ). There, here quickly finds a spot where he thinks that the Dish would be installed. His partner agrees.

Now, while this guy is busy drilling holes for the Dish’s stand, he gets a call on his mobile. It seems, luck had shone for us. Apparently, TataSky’s auditors were coming for a visit to see how these guys are doing their jobs. And I am really thankful that those guys came for the visit. They did a splendid job with the installation. They attach a device to the Dish, and track the exact direction and signal quality of the transmission. If the Auditor hadn’t come, these guys wouldn’t have followed the procedure. So make sure, that this particular thing is done.

See my flickr account link in the right sidebar to see the photos of the dish and the installation. Awesome job done with the wires.

After that, they came back to my house, fixed the wires inside the house and connected the digicomps and we were good to go. The service was activated and the demo was given. I was really impressed with the quality, and heavily cursed my cable guy for providing the pathetic quality.

I’ll continue with a [ Part Three ] of the review soon :)

Thanks

I had become tired of my cablewallah’s services. They were pathetic. 50% of the English channels were either blocked, or were telecasted in poor conditions. Lot of picture noise, low quality were “normal”.

And well, CAS was going to be made compulsary in Mumbai suburban area in a month or two anyway.

I really wanted to go DTH. I’d read a lot about interactive TV, and was really keen on taking either Dish TV or TataSky. I started to read online reviews, consulting friends who had either of the two installed and I even went and got a demo of both. Now, from what I concluded, TataSky and DishTV both have the same quality of video and audio, since both apparently use the same technology. The difference, something that really convinced me to make my decision was the “service” factor. TataSky customer care ( be it clients-oriented or pre-sales ) is extremely superior to what DishTV offers. Not only the customer care, but the after sales service by TataSky is also great.

Let me write my experience in 3 steps.

1) Pre-sales / enquiry / reviews etc

2) Installation / Demo

3) After Sales service.

Tragedy strikes

August 23, 2007

Bad news bad news :(

While MTNL has already been having problems with its connectivity, citing “server” issues, I received an SMS from Airtel and as if the earth slipped from under my feet.

<

blockquote>Dear Customer, currently you are charged a daily rental of Rs. 7 for GPRS. Effective 27th Aug, 07, charges for GPRS are revised to Rs. 14.99 / day. Airtel GPRS is still the most economical option for internet access compared to DialUp, Cable etc.

Absent

So where have I been ?

Well, lots of things actually.. Yes, lots :|

To start off, I have had my Unit Tests going on. Bah.. stupid things. Where I sit, I have one crazy girl right next to me, and one idiotic guy on my right. Both belong to the same year for which I’m giving my exams :| So much for a “test”. Not only me, 40% of the class sits in this manner. Now, don’t ask me what percent of the class has been photocopying each other :| We used to get 120 minutes to attempt 50 marks during our three years in Diploma, but here, we get only 60 to attempt 40 marks of boring brief answers :((

On the other hand, MTNL has been in some huge shit lately, with a major connectivity issue that prevents us from accessing 80% of the sites hosted on the World Wide Web. Accha? itself was inaccessible to me for the past 4 days. Finally, I got through :)
