Hello Everyone,

First, to those who don’t know what shoutcast is, here’s a little information.

SHOUTcast is basically Nullsoft’s Winamp based streaming audio distribution system. Once installed, you can use the server to broadcast audio to any number of users. If you have a small quantity of listeners, you can just do it off your desktop pc.

In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to install SHOUTcast on a server running a Linux OS.

Contact me, to get your own SHOUTCAST server with unlimited bandwidth for as low as $10/month

Before we begin, lets take a look at our requirements.

  1. A Linux Server with Root Access ( SSH )
  2. puTTY- SSH Client
  3. Winamp player 5.x+ on your desktop PC
  4. SHOUTcast Source for Winamp 5.x DSP Plug-in

First, fire up puTTY and login as root.

At the prompt, type

wget http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/sc1-9-8/sc_serv_1.9.8_Linux.tar.gz

This will transload the shoutcast server software to your server. Please note that the link will change as a new version is released.

Now, we need to extract the contents on the server. For this, type:

tar -zxvf sc_serv_1.9.8_Linux.tar.gz

This will extract the contents of the file you downloaded. Make sure you change your path to the desired directory before extracting.

Now, we need to edit the configuration file. We basically edit the following settings in the file.

  1. MaxUser
  2. Password
  3. PortBase
  4. AdminPassword (remember to uncomment)

To do this, fire up your favorite text editor, depending upon the OS installed on the server.

In the SSH, type:

vi sc_serv.conf OR nano sc_serv.conf OR pico_sc_serv.conf

Here, edit the settings as required and save the file.

Now, you need to fire up the software. To do this, type:

./sc_serv sc_serv.conf

Your server is now running the latest version of SHOUTCast :)

Now, on the desktop machine, install the DSP plugin and run it.

Fill in the required details and connect and start broadcasting :)

Any questions ?

Yep, yep. I cleared my last year of Computer Engineering with a first class. Now the hunt for a good networking course.

What’s with the I’m safe in the title ?

Well, two things :|

1) I almost burnt my face in the morning today when the gas geyser over burnt and spit out fire. I luckily duck down, but damn it was hot :|

2) On my way to a college, a truck hit my autorickshaw from the side. The truck didn’t have enough speed, else it would have knocked my vehicle over :|

Oh well, thats all.

P.S: I promise the next entry will be something more interesting.

Err…. sorry for the scary laugh :p

Nothing much to update except that a search for “Accha” lists preshit.net as the first search result ( was 4th previously ) :D/

Also, a search for “Preshit” lists the first result as www.preshit.net ( was 5th previously ) and preshit.net as the second :D

Reasons to celebrate.. who’s up for a party :>

Buying a Camera

July 3, 2007

Ummm…. yeah,

I am thinking of getting my hands on a camera. You might already be knowing how I have always been a SONY Fanboy. I already own a fantabulous handycam. I have always loved the “video” part of the photography, but I want to try my hand at  still photography. I tried searching for digital camera reviews, but nothing really caught my eye. Does anyone know any good camera review site ?

I really love going outdoors and try and capture some of nature’s best scenes. These are the ones I recently clicked with a friends 4MP SONY Digicam ( Ha :P, SONY again ) at Matheran. Man, what an amazing climate the place has there. Its like you are right in the middle of nature. Cool and silent. Now, I really don’t know whether I should go for a normal one, or a SLR. I have made enough earnings in the past to have a budget of ~20K :D.

Some peice of advice would be nice :)

Who doesn’t love a holiday ?

I’d love to have a break from the boring day’s schedule, the work and peer pressure, the boring afternoon, same old routine and goto some place I could relax and enjoy. Someplace where there would be no-one to disturb you. Someplace silent, somewhere amidst the beauty of the nature. There are a lot of holiday programs in the market now-a-days, Club Mahindra or Leisure-Time being some of them. They have holiday programs where-in once you become a member, you can enjoy a dream vacation and get lost somewhere in the world of holidays. Having tie-ups with a vast number of resorts in the country and internationally, you can choose any destination for your vacation.

Leisuretime has been providing holidays ever since 1993 and look really promising. Their list of resorts is vast and spread over the entire earth. They promise to provide the best holidaying experience to you. You can just choose any of the resorts in their wagon and make the booking.

Here I go, to convince mom/dad for something like this. I really need a vacation for sure. Matheran was just not enough for me :P
