Of Nokia E50, Airtel GPRS Net on Phone plan and yayy

I can’t stop smiling. I really can’t. Happiness, joy, excited is all what I am. I feel like \:D/\:D/\:D/

I have been longing for a good phone after my “mama” took away my 6030 and gave me his 1100 :(. SMSing on it was a real PITA. I couldn’t even scroll up and down.

Well, anyways, coming to the point, I purchased a Nokia E50 for myself. And I’m loving every paisa that I’ve spent for it. Living every moment that I spend with it. Amazing, Superb, Fantastic etc are mere under-statemnets to describe it.

I won’t really tell you about the features because a simple Google search gives you tons of results. Even a search for reviews will be good.

I have even activated Airtel’s GPRS service on it. Its called “Net On Phone” and is available for a mere Rs. 2/day and I’ve been lucky enough to get EDGE speeds. Plus, I am also able to connect it to my PC and use it >:) ( Unlimited downloads @ Rs. 60 / month >:) )

Hmm… I though E series were business phones.. I didn’t know they were any good. ah well.. i lost all interest in phones now so I am out of touch. last week I had an embarrassing conversion with my dad when he wanted advice on which phone to buy!
Do any of you know anyone in Bangalore who gets edge speeds(like 300kbps)? If so, I am getting a new phone the next time I go home.

Well jatin, the plans are dependent on which circle you belong to. While I pay Rs. 2/day for NOP, My friend Santosh from Bangalore has to pay Rs. 5/day for the same plan. Also, while Mobile Office is available for Rs.7/day here, in Bangalore, the same is available for Rs. 20 / day.

Also, you need to have the Mobile Office plan to surf the net on your PC.

    Where are you from ?

Whats the difference between Airtel’s Net On Phone service and Mobile Office…

  9. Preshit

    Well,

Plan wise, NetonPhone is supposed to work ONLY on the phone while with Mobile Office, you can use the same net on the computer too using ur phone as a modem.

And well, pricewise, ofcourse, MO is costly..

cool… how did you find the info for using the e50 as a EDGE modem??

    Aug 6th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
  11. Preshit

    The manual :P ( Knowledge actually :) )

Well, the E50 is a EDGE enabled phone, and when connected to the USB to use GPRS, you get good EDGE speeds from the tower nearby.

Okaaaay… And where do i get the manual?? :( at this point the modem connects but ppp fails so my impression is i may need the ppp related AT commands for airtel. Thx

Well, can you tell me which mobile, circle and plan are you on ?

    thx!
I have the Nokia E50, AirTel GPRS@399 plan, and connecting via USB & Bluetooth from a MacBook (using the default Nokia Infrared script which seems ok for the modem handshake).
A manual of the E50’s AT commands would be swell!
A mac script would be sweet as well :)
I’ll get to googling re modem commands when I have a moment but if anyone has tried and true scripts it would be great!

    Dude,
R u really impressed with NOP???
    IMO it really sucks..
    1. U have a download file size limit of 3mb
    2. The speeds really suck compared to MO
    3. Most messengers wont work on it due to proxy probs..
BTW Opera mini and the OSS browser really rock on e50 + NOP

    Sep 24th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
  17. Preshit

Well Pathik, if you ask me, I’m neither impressed with NOP nor am I content with it. But its an excellent solution to have since MO is now Rs. 15/day..

The thing that bothered me was the proxy. But well, nothing we can do about it :(

    Hi Vinod,

Could you provide as how to set up dial up for mobile office in desktop using 6600 & IVT Bluesoleil. I want to know the username and password… If i use blank connection reach upto connecting network computer…. then stop. IP is Airtel, mumbai.

    Hello bhaskaran,

Since you’re using Mobile office, there really shouldn’t be a problem.
The username is 91xxxxxxxxxx where the last 10 digits are your mobile number. And the password is 0000.

    Try if this works.

    :))
You better be careful with your words there. I’m not benefiting from this post here, to lie.

Connect your phone to your PC/Mac via Bluetooth or USB and use the same settings as of NOP.

    Its _dat_ simple.

What is difference between airtel GPRS & airtel live.

    Dec 27th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
  26. Preshit

Airtel Live is Airtel’s free service, but is limited to access only Google’s search and Airtel Live Homepage.

Airtel GPRS includes NetOnPhone and MobileOffice services.

Nobody here know what thing is what. Airtel’s Airtel Live and NOP Service is WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) which is an international standard i.e. set of rules for wireless transmission of data around the world across different types of service providers i.e GSM or CDMA, etc and different types of handsets. While Mobile Office is GPRS service. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) it allows to send/receive data using Internet Protocol N/W (and not WAP Protocol) and hence, the speed is faster than WAP. While using GPRS the phone just acts like a normal modem or say router which allows you to surf the net by connecting it to a PC and talk simultanously. I do not understand how the above person is able to use WAP on PC and even if he is using it there is no way he can get EDGE GPRS speeds because WAP trandfers data in bytes while GPRS or EGDE GPRS transfers data in packets. Please tell me even I would like to know how you made it possible??? Please!!!

One thing is sure and I know 100% that niether Airtel Live nor Net on Phone is GPRS both are WAP i.e. Wireless Application Protocol.

    Ashish,

Thanks for sharing the info. I’ll be frank in saying, I’m sure not knowldgeable about mobile technology as much as you seem to be.
The above post outlays my experience with using NOP on my PC. As I’ve already said, NOT all sites open with NOP. Its just a free alternative, and that’s about it.
